The Master Plan Study for the Uptown Yonge BIA recognized the diverse character of the area and the need to revitalize this urban shopping district. Adjacent streets are filled with mixed use housing types whose residents rely on Yonge Street for their daily shopping needs and activities. Preliminary site inventory revealed a narrow right-of-way of only 26.5 meters, requiring a creative response to meet the needs of four through lanes of traffic, on-street parking and pedestrian traffic, while adhering to the City of Toronto’s streetscape standards and guidelines.
Coordinating with the City of Toronto’s Economic Development Department and the Uptown Yonge BIA, EDA Collaborative Inc. identified locations for future streetscape plantings and furnishings, paving details and signage for way-finding. Responding to the identified needs and character of the street will provided opportunity to make this section of Yonge Street a more vibrant and economically viable retail centre.
