Jasper National Park, AB
The Tonquin Valley trail system provides access to the Amethyst Lakes on the Alberta - British Columbia border in Jasper National Park. Due to its spectacular high alpine location, it was regarded by Parks Canada as a nationally significant trail, and the significant use warranted an extensive upgrading program. Due to its mountain environment and national park location, environmental constraints to construction methods were very stringent. Trail width was limited, machinery was not allowed off the trail at any time, and helicopters were required for supply of materials. Specialized construction details were developed to withstand the high level of hiking use, and also to accommodate equestrian use of the trail.
