Fort McMurray, Alberta
EDA Collaborative Inc. developed a design for the Borealis Park Water Playground as part of the overall design of the Park Centre Development. The water playground was developed as the focus for summer activity in Borealis Park, Fort McMurray’s new urban park. The challenge, as with all waterplay facilities that EDA has been in involved with, was to create a unique experience by developing a range of new spray features that reflect some of the character of the site. Originally, the Park Centre site was the City’s water treatment plant and therefore a design that featured large diameter, colourful pipe seemed to best reflect some of that character. The use of custom spray elements together with some proven premanufactured item’s, provided the best possible variety of play experiences for the available budget.
The design also responded to concerns of the Parks Department and was designed to minimize major future maintenance problems of waterline breakage under hard surface areas by ensuring that there were no joints in the pipe from the supply header to the base of each individual spray toy. This attention to operations and maintenance issues together with the unique spray toys and an operating system that combines timed and user activated features requiring no supervision makes this a facility that will provide hours of fun for many seasons to come.
