The Athabasca River played a very important role in the history of the Town of Athabasca. When the railway was removed from its location on prime riverfront property in downtown Athabasca, the Town acquired the land with the intention of revitalizing the role of the river in the community.
EDA Collaborative Inc. was retained to prepare an Area Redevelopment Plan which would provide a vision for the Town, recommending land uses, property subdivision, and open space development. The ARP included concept plans for the Town Common and adjacent streetscape development. The Town Common design included a natural amphitheatre, boardwalk, view deck, small shade pavilion, walkways, and planting.
